Located just about 30 minutes outside of Boston, Salem is a perfect destination for Halloween lovers, witchcraft enthusiasts, and travelers looking to add something a little bit different to their travel plans
In October, Salem takes on an eerie, spooky atmosphere that draws visitors from all around the world. From haunted houses to witch tours, I have compiled a list of 31 things to do in Salem this October that will guarantee an unforgettable experience.
How To Get To Salem
From Boston, you may rent a car and can get to Salem in about 30 to 40 minutes. Having your own car allows you to have complete control over your trip. You go where you want to go, when you want to go. If you want to take a few side trips and have more control over your travel schedule, this choice can be more practical.

I’ve always been fascinated by the Salem Witch Trials, and the Salem Witch Museum is the best place to start. It offers an immersive experience that takes you back to 1692, with life-sized stage sets, and dramatic lighting. It’s an eerie yet enlightening way to understand this dark chapter in American history.
The Salem Witch Museum is a must-see destination that offers a fascinating look into a troubling time in American history with its interesting exhibits and educational performances.
2. Take A Stroll Through The Salem Witch Trials Memorial

Walking through the Salem Witch Trials Memorial is a somber experience. Dedicated to the 20 victims of the trials, this simple yet powerful memorial is a place for reflection. Each stone bench bears the name of a victim, a poignant reminder of the tragedy that unfolded here.
There are granite benches that represent each person who was accused of witchcraft. Their name, the manner of execution, and the date of execution are etched on each bench. On the memorial’s stone threshold, one may read the words of the accused, which were extracted straight from the court records.
3. Check Out The Salem Witch Board Museum

If you’re intrigued by fortune telling boards, the Salem Witch Board Museum is a must-visit. Being the world’s ONLY Ouija museum, it houses one of the largest collections of Ouija boards in the world.
The exhibits are fascinating, showcasing the evolution of these mysterious boards and their role in popular culture.
Has this toy received a bad rap from Hollywood or has it merited its ominous reputation? Can plastic, cardboard, and wood really be evil? Check out the debate for yourself!

One of the most unique things I did in Salem was participating in a live witchcraft ritual. There is so much to do while visiting the Waterfront at Salem Harbor!
One of the highlights of the Salem Waterfront is the historic Derby Wharf. The sight of sailboats bobbing gently in the water against the backdrop of vibrant fall foliage is nothing short of mesmerizing and in my opinion one of the best spots for photos!
For those who love maritime history, you’ll need to check out the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. There you can explore the historic buildings and learn about Salem’s rich seafaring past.

Some of the most well known locations in the city are Omen, which is where I had my reading. You may also get readings and have spells cast for you at Pentagram and Stardust. Additionally, Maison Vampyre offers readings, holds classes, and conducts rituals for commitment.

You need to visit their wax museum to see their collection of eerie figures, which includes well-known witches. The museum’s collection includes more than 50 figurines, each of which highlights a particular chapter in Salem’s history.
Walking through the museum, I felt as if I had stepped back in time to witness the infamous Salem witch trials. The lifelike wax figures depicted key moments in Salem’s history, from the trials themselves to the daily lives of the Puritan settlers.
One of the most striking exhibits was the depiction of a witch trial in progress. The tension in the room was palpable as the wax figures portrayed the fear and hysteria that gripped Salem in 1692. It was a powerful reminder of the city’s dark past.
The museum also offers guided tours that provide deeper insights into the historical events and figures represented. It’s an educational and immersive experience that will leave you with a profound appreciation for Salem’s history.

I remembering reading The House of the Seven Gables in middle school and absolutely loved it. Imagine my delight when I learned the house made famous by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel was a real place!
Stepping inside the historic mansion, I felt as if I had entered the pages of the gothic tale. The guided tour took me through the beautifully preserved rooms, each filled with period furniture and decor. The highlight of the tour was ascending the secret staircase to the attic!
The house is surrounded by lovely gardens and offers stunning views of Salem Harbor. It’s a place where history, literature, and natural beauty converge, providing a truly enchanting experience.
16. International Monster Museum

This awesomely crazy museum is dedicated to all things monstrous, featuring an extensive collection of creatures from folklore, mythology, and popular culture.
Walking through the dimly lit corridors, I encountered lifelike replicas of legendary monsters, including Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and the Mummy. The exhibits were not only eerie but also incredibly detailed, making it easy to get lost in the world of these iconic characters.
The museum also offers interactive displays and special effects that add to the immersive experience.
If you’re particularly fascinated by monsters, then you absolutely cannot miss the International Monster Museum in Salem.

The museum’s Yin Yu Tang, a 200-year-old Chinese house reassembled in Salem, is a highlight that should not be missed. Admission is around $20 for adults and free for children under 16. PEM also offers special events and workshops, making it a cultural hub worth exploring.

One of the biggest Halloween celebrations, the Official Salem Witches’ Halloween Ball, attracts people from all over the globe for a night of magic, music, powerful rituals, and prizes.
Hammond Castle Museum is throwing their Goblin King’s Ball and who doesn’t want to party in an actual castle?
Held at the Hawthorne Hotel in September, the ever-famous Endless Night hosts a Vampire Ball in Salem every year.
Looking for kid-friendly activities? The Children’s Halloween Costume Ball is hosted by the Good Witch of Salem, and it’s loads of family fun!
I had the chance to attend the Hawthorne Hotel’s Annual Halloween Ball, which transforms the historic venue into a grand, spooky spectacle. Each year, the ball features a unique theme, elaborate costumes, live entertainment, and hauntingly beautiful decor. It was an evening of dancing, mingling with costumed revelers, and enjoying themed cocktails.

A visit to Salem wouldn’t be complete without exploring the historic Ropes Mansion. This Georgian Colonial mansion, built in the 1720s, is not only a beautifully preserved piece of history but also believed to be haunted. The mansion’s gardens, adorned with fall foliage, provide a picturesque setting for an October visit.
Inside, the mansion is furnished with period pieces and offers insight into the lives of the Ropes family who lived there for more than 200 years. The mansion is open to the public with no admission fee, though donations are welcome. It’s a perfect stop for history buffs and those intrigued by Salem’s ghostly lore.
